Mathew Knowles said that his daughter Beyonce’s light skin has really helped her in the entertainment industry, and went on to suggest that if she were darker, she wouldn’t be as big of a star.
He made the comments during an interview with Ebony when he took on “colorism” in the music industry.
“When it comes to black females, who are the people who get their music played on pop radio? Mariah Cray, Rihanna, the female rapper Nicki Minaj, my kids [Beyonce and Solange], and what do they all have in common?”
The interviewer replied: “They’re lighter skinned,” to which Mathew agreed and said: “Do you think that’s an accident?”
Beyonce dad, who is 66, and who allegedly has a strained relationship with his daughter is on a press run for his book “Racism: From The Eyes Of A Child.”
But do you agree with Mr. Knowles? If Beyonce had the same talent but was the same complexion of, say, her Destiny’s Child groupmate Kelly Rowland, would she be as big of a star?
